Sir Orfeo
‘Sir Orfeo’ is an English poem in the tradition of a Breton Lay. In its day, it was probably performed orally to music as well as read. The author of the poem is unknown. The oldest copy of ‘Sir Orfeo’ is found in the Auchinleck manuscript which dates to around 1330-1340 A.D. As its title suggests, the poem is an English adaptation and reworking of the popular Orpheus myth, the most famous version of which is found in Ovid’s Metamorphoses....
